Studio Guide

At Atelier Cône10, our aim is to offer you a place where you can discover the joy of creating with clay. We offer classes for all skill levels. Whether you come for a single class or a full session, it's important to apply the following studio guidelines and rules:

  • Be respectful of others and their space;

  • Never touch other people's work or tools without their consent;

  • Inform the workshop staff of any broken equipment or parts (or of any problems);

  • Make good use of workshop materials, do not waste or abuse them;

  • Put your cell phone on vibrate and take outside calls discreetly.

Attire: Make sure you wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty! Loose-fitting clothes that could accidentally get caught in running machines should be avoided, as should long, untied hair. Bring your own apron - you can also buy one from our studio at reception. During winter, boots will be placed in a designated area. Bring comfortable indoor shoes that you can easily get dirty.

Studio space: Whether you're working on the wheel, handbuilding, glazing or cleaning your tools, it's important to be aware of the space you occupy. Please share the space respectfully with others.

Welcoming visitors: Authorization to bring a guest to the workshop must be granted in advance. Make sure the guest respects the rules and regulations in place.

Label and sign your work: Be sure to sign your work with its shelf number, to prevent pieces from being lost. Unnumbered pieces will not be fired. Use a pencil or appropriate tool to sign them. Use clear, well-marked handwriting. A stamp can also be used to sign your full name.

Kiln room: No one may enter the kiln room. Designated team members are solely responsible for loading, unloading and lighting the ovens.

Dust: Clay dust is very dangerous when inhaled. Studio floors are regularly cleaned to prevent dust build-up. An efficient air purifier is used, but the following steps should also be followed to ensure that dust levels remain low:

  • Regularly wipe down your work area to remove dirt.

  • Once you've finished with the slabs and roundels, clean them with a damp sponge to remove any clay residue. Never put them directly under running water.

  • Do not sand dry or fired pieces inside the studio, but rather outside. In very cold weather, it may be possible to sand in the washbasins, using a sponge to dampen the room beforehand and keep dust to a minimum.

Cleaning: Cleaning is necessary after each session.

  • Stop working on your pieces 30 minutes before the end of the course.

  • All clay accumulated in the splash pans should be placed in the appropriate recycling bucket along with the water that has also accumulated there.

  • Rinse towels, tools, boards and your hands in the bucket of water, then rinse them in the sink so that no bits of clay fall out or clog the pipes.

  • Wipe the tables and plates clean with the large sponges. Do this until the area is as clean as you'd like it to be when you arrive.

  • If you've dirtied the floor, wipe it down with the mop and leave it to dry.

  • Return all the tools you used during the course to the workstation or to their original place.

  • Do not leave tools or equipment in the sink.

  • Rinse rags well and hang to dry. Do not leave any traces of clay on them.

  • Thank you for helping us to stay green and recycle clay, paper, cans, glass, etc.
