Jean Mailloux

Artist’s words on his work “Mornes”, a series between lithography and ceramics.

My work is resolutely based on craft techniques, relatively far removed from modern technologies. Without trying to distance myself from the latter at all costs, I find great pleasure in working with my hands. I accept that it takes time for the work to take shape, whether it's the accumulation of layers of ink in the case of lithographs, the multiple drying and firing stages involved in the creation of ceramics, or the patient work required for embroidery on paper.

The dichotomy between the artisanal practices I value and that are often overlooked, and the more seductive, “efficient” modern methods mirrors how natural spaces are frequently dismissed as worthless, because of nature’s slow cycle.

While I have been practicing printmaking for many years, I am just beginning to explore ceramics. For this exhibition at Cône 10, I present small-format collages combining fragments of these two techniques. These works, which revolve around the representation of the mountain, are part of a longer research project on the themes of the mysterious forest and the ghost.

In French, a “morne” is a hill or a mountain (mainly on an island or a coast)...

We are honored and delighted to present the work of Jean Mailloux in our gallery.

Jean’s Morne series explores the intersection of ceramics and lithography—two artisanal practices we invite you to celebrate with us at the exhibition opening!
