Handle Pulling Workshop

This is a session completely dedicated to the craft of making pulled handles! In this 2 hour workshop, we will demonstrate the techniques of making blanks, attaching, pulling, and shaping handles. This workshop is great for beginners who have at least 4 weeks of experience or more experienced potters who want to deepen their handle-making journey. By the end of the workshop, expect to have a more practiced hand at handles!

Handles are often the most important factor in what makes a cup a delight to hold. If done just right, the look and feel of a handle can make the perfect mug!

During the workshop, participants will be given a detailed demonstration, followed by a facilitation time with support. Participants will practice pulling on ready-made slabs and one pre-made cup they may keep! Participants who are studio members are encouraged to bring a leather-hard cup of their own to work with as well!

Requirement: Anyone who has previously taken over 4 weeks of throwing classes is welcome. This minimum experience is required! Toute personne ayant déjà suivi plus de 4 semaines de cours de tournage est la bienvenue. C

  • Workshop Outline

    • Welcome and Introduction (5 minutes)
We’ll start with a brief overview of the workshop flow and the materials used.
Please note: participants arriving more than 5 minutes late will not be admitted, and no refunds or rescheduling will be possible.

    • Demonstration and Guided Practice (about 120 minutes)
You’ll enjoy a detailed demonstration followed by a guided hands-on practice session.
Each participant will have the chance to work with pre-rolled slabs.
A prefabricated cup will be provided for practice, but members already enrolled in the studio are invited to bring their own piece (leather-hard consistency recommended) to work directly on their own creation.

    • Throughout the session, a facilitator will be available to offer support and guidance.

    • Tool and Studio Cleanup (about 25 minutes)
Cleanup is an essential part of the process!
Caring for the tools and space is part of honoring the craft itself.

    • Wrap-up and Finishing Options (10 minutes)
At the end of the session, you’ll be able to select a few of your pieces and choose from our in-house glazes.
An additional fee will apply depending on the size of your piece ($5–$15) and $5 per color if you wish to have it glazed with one of our colored glazes.

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before the session begins and wait in our gallery space.

Important: Latecomers arriving more than 5 minutes after the session starts will not be admitted, out of respect for the class structure and other participants. No refunds or rescheduling will be possible.

Your instructor will invite you into the studio at the scheduled start time.

This pottery class is for adults only.

A few recommendations before your pottery session:

    • Keep your nails short

    • Do not wear rings, bracelets, or watches

    • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for a studio environment

  • Only if you chose to keep pieces during the workshop. (See “How the session unfolds” for more info)

You will receive an email approximately one month after your session, once your ceramic piece is ready for pickup. Be sure to check your spam or junk folder!

You will then have 2 weeks to come pick up your pieces during our designated pickup hours. Please bring the email with you. If you are unavailable, you may ask someone else to pick up your pieces — they must show your email as proof.

After the 2-week period, any unclaimed pieces will be donated.

Please note that your piece may crack or break during firing — pottery takes practice! This is why this workshop is focused on the experience, not the final result.
